Meet Your Teacher

Hi, I’m John! Im the man in front of the camera and screen here at Johns Plant Adventures.

Like many of you, I have had a love for all things plants and flowers since I was was very young. This passion could not be fulfilled by simply filling my parents home and yard with greenery when i was a kid, and so for a long time, I knew that i wanted to turn plants into more than just a hobby. That mission started when I was 14, which is when i began working in a greenhouse in my hometown of Troy Michigan. I spent my 4 years of highschool working there while learning all of the ins and outs of how to cultivate the coveted “green thumb”.

After learning what I could at this point in my journey, I set off to study horticulture at ASU and enlist myself in multiple summer internships which included the Desert Botanical Garden, Disney World, and Brightview Landscape development.

The first internship, at the Desert Botanical garden, was a wonderful learning experience. I learned all about desert plants, and how to integrate garden plants into the landscape. My favorite place in the garden was the ‘Center of Desert Living’ which by no surprise, had lush greenery and containers. I learned all about taking care of beautiful plants in the deserts harsh growing environment, and how protect plants using microclimates.

The summer afterwards, I landed an internship in the horticulture department at Walt Disney World. Thus I spent my summer in Florida working on the gorgeous flower beds at disney world. Here I experienced how large scale flower instillations can be executed efficiently in hot climates. This included large flower beds, containers, hanging baskets, and how to pick myself up out of bed at 2 a.m to plant and prune flowers in the dark with a headlamp on!

My final internship was at Brightview Landscape Development where I learned all about designing and planning sustainable landscapes. Plus, I got to buy a lot of plants for this internship which super fun of course!

While these certainly taught me what I needed to know and gave me lots of invaluable experience, the time had come to put all of that knowledge and experience into action and grow my own full-blown flower garden.

For three years after i finished school, I created and maintained an acre sized cut flower garden which finally allowed me to turn my passion into a business. By doing this, I was able to meet and sell my flowers to florists all across the state which allowed me to get plugged into the flower community in Arizona.

Along with this, I started creating container gardens for clients houses, growing and propagating plants to sell by turning my backyard into a full blown nursery, and the rest is history. As a result of this, I was able to meet so many great flower-loving people, some of whom were confident in their green thumb powers, and many who felt unsure, uneducated, or down right intimidated to grow their own flowers.

This course is for everyone who loves flowers and wants to feel empowered and capable of growing the flower garden of their dreams. In doing so, we can create a community built around support and guidance on how to become masters of this most beautiful art form that we all have the ability to be proficient in. Heres to growing your greenest of green thumbs.
